In this story, a band of so-called pirates launches an attack on a coastal monastery. Their task seems easy—the inhabitants have never faced an assault before. But what begins as a simple raid quickly turns into something far more unsettling, as the abbess proves to be far more than she appears…
Imagine this scene — the Mediterranean Sea, the Spanish coast, the beginning of the 16th century… In the middle of the night, a mysterious ship put in beside the coastal cliffs, not far from the foundations of a fortified monastery. One final detail, lightly implied — there was a band of pirates on board! And then it was time for our riddle: could they, by any chance, have been plotting something involving the monastery? That one seemed easy enough to answer; the real question was how this rather unusual boarding action would end. Unusually as well, as it happened — but let us take things in order…
